Jordan V. Stafford

 Jordan Virgil Stafford

(abt. 1844 – March 16, 1908)

 

There are two renditions of the birth of Jordan V. Stafford.  One account says that he was born into slavery in Tennessee and his father was also his owner, William Boyd Stafford who was born in North Carolina.  The other account is that he was born in England and he claimed the state of Tennessee as this place of birth.  His first wife was Julie Eskridge, also born in Tennessee about 1842.  Documented on the 1870 and the 1880 US Census, they resided in Scott, Poinsett County, Arkansas.  Listed on the 1870 US Census, the children names are James  Eskridge(1860) [stepson]; Della (1863); Jordan (1866); Edwin (1868); and Phillip (1870).  Listed on the 1880 US Census, the children names are Charley (1866); Ed (1868); Gus (1870); Ophelia (1872); Mollie [Mary Cornelia] (1874); Anner [Anna] (1876) and Georga (1879). Julia Stafford transitioned around 1896.

 

The widower, Jordan Virgil Stafford married Rosetta Sanders around 1898 in Arkansas.  They resided in Scott, Poinsett County, Arkansas, and to their union six children were born.  They are Elmer Elizabeth (1899-1979); Elsie Robelia (1901-1996); Evelyn Olivia (1903-1986); triplets, Johnny Virgil (1907-1988), Lonny (1907-1907) and Donny (1907-1908).
